HANDEL: MESSIAH (ARR. MOZART) - RILLING, BACH COLLEGIUM STUTTGART
George Frideric Handel’s “Der Messias,” as arranged by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is performed here by the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart. These choirs are led by musical director Helmuth Rilling, and the performance, sung in Germany, features solos by soprano Donna Brown, mezzo soprano Cornelia Kallisch, tenor Roberto Saccà, and bass Alastair Miles. Helmuth Rilling conducts Mozart’s 1789 arrangement of that ‘Grand Musical Entertainment’. According to Rilling, “the details are what make this arrangement so fascinating: dynamic changes, a different segmentation of solo and chorus parts, the instrumentation modulated to the tone characteristic of Mozart’s time.
